Weekend

It is funny how the weekend has changed and is constantly changing for me as I grow older and after becoming a Dad. Single me would look forward to the weekend because of going out, drinking and partying. Dad me, looks forward to the time with my boys.

My time with my sons is the most important thing in the world to me. We laugh, play and have a lot of fun and I do try to mix a little bit of education into the weekend as well. Having a mother that taught school for over 45 years, a few of those things/ideas have rubbed off on me. Our weekends have become a time to bond and for me to teach them about cooking and grilling and I have loved it. When I was there age and to be honest, I really don’t remember my father teaching me how to cook let alone how to use a grill. So for me, it is really important to be able to spend that time with them.

The boys and I start on Wednesday talking about what we are doing for the weekend and I try to prepare them for things like, a basketball game that I want to watch or planning our meal plans for the week. My time with my boys are what I live for and mean the world for me. So as I get ready to leave the office today, I can’t wait to get home to see my boys, wrap my arms around them and get ready for the weekend and the downtime.

We had another successful guy weekend. The boys had been sick for several days with bad colds, so it was a low key weekend. We watched sports, played, watched a lot of Thomas the Train. But most importantly, we laughed a lot. I can honestly say, this was one of my best weekends in a long time. I love being the father to these two little boys and feel lucky that I’ve been entrusted in their lives as their father. Because for everything that I am teaching them, they are teaching me about loving unconditionally.

I love guys weekend.

This has been a weekend that we have been looking forward to for awhile, because it is one of our two weekends a year that we get to spend in the country.

For 2 days, we get to sleep in, as our friends will take care of the boys so that we can rest and relax. We will play with the boys, let them run around with the dogs, play outside in the open backyard.
The last time that we spent the weekend in the country, I slept for 12 hours. I can not remember the last time that I got more than 6 hours of sleep.

We don’t get many chances to take a weekend to get away to the country, but this is one that I’ve been looking forward to for about 6 months.

For most, the weekend is a time to get caught up with chores around the house and planning for the next week. But that isn’t the case for us this weekend. This weekend, is a little different, as we are going to be kid less.

Finally, a weekend off. Well, not really a weekend, more like 24 hours, but nevertheless, time off. No responsibilities, just my wife and I. Dinner, a movie, a little shopping for the boys.

Will we miss them? Absolutely. Fortunately, our family will be sending us photos, but it is needed time a way. Not because we will not love them or miss them, but before it was a family a four, it was my wife and I, a family of two.

As I recently told a friend, who he and his wife are expecting their first child, it is important to stay connected to your wife after your child is born. Because if you lose that connection or the relationship gets lost, there is no marriage.

So plan a weekend away. Take time for just the two of you. Miss your children, but reconnect with your spouse.

I can not wait for the weekend.
